Is AI transcription legal?

AI transcription is generally legal as a technology.

The legal risk usually comes from how the audio was recorded, whether people consented, what information appears in the recording, where the participants are located, and how the transcript is stored or shared. In the United States, federal recording law generally permits recording with one-party consent, but some states require all-party consent for private conversations.

Other countries may have stricter rules. Even when recording is lawful, uploading audio to an AI tool can raise privacy, confidentiality, employment, school, medical, financial, or customer-data issues.

Copyright can also matter if you transcribe protected media and publish or sell the transcript. For ordinary personal notes from audio you are allowed to record, AI transcription is usually low risk.

For meetings, interviews, legal matters, healthcare, client calls, or private classes, get consent, disclose the use of AI transcription, choose a secure tool, and limit who can access the transcript. This is general information, not legal advice.
